Collaborating with Virgin Media O2 and delivery partners
A complete turnkey service
To enhance network connectivity across Lancashire, Redburn was appointed by Virgin Media O2 to deliver a major fibre deployment project in Skelmersdale. The project formed part of a wider roll-out to improve broadband resilience, coverage, and capacity for both residential and business users in the region.
Redburn provided a full turnkey solution encompassing design, civils, installation, testing, and reinstatement. The works involved the installation of new duct routes, chamber builds, and fibre blowing to connect over 3,000 properties to the Virgin Media O2 network.
Working within a densely populated area and to tight timescales, Redburn coordinated all aspects of delivery — from stakeholder liaison and traffic management to reinstatement and quality assurance — ensuring full compliance with local authority requirements and Virgin Media O2 specifications.
Precision delivery through planning and expertise
Meeting complex urban challenges
The project required meticulous planning to navigate existing utilities, minimise disruption, and maintain high standards of safety and workmanship. Using a combination of trenchless and open-cut techniques, Redburn’s teams optimised delivery through phased works, ensuring continuous network availability throughout the build.
Close collaboration with Virgin Media O2’s network engineers allowed the deployment to integrate seamlessly into existing infrastructure. Redburn also implemented rigorous quality control measures and digital reporting systems, providing real-time progress updates and photographic verification at every stage.
Scalable and cost-effective solutions
Building infrastructure for the future
Redburn deployed scalable fibre delivery methods, combining precision engineering with advanced civils coordination. This included the installation of new multi-way duct systems and chambers designed to accommodate future expansion and evolving network technologies.
Through effective planning and local supply chain engagement, Redburn achieved accelerated delivery with minimal disruption to residents and road users — a key objective of the client and local authority alike.
Safety, compliance, and stakeholder engagement
Zero Harm approach
Operating under strict health and safety protocols, Redburn maintained a Zero Harm record throughout the project, with no incidents or service strikes reported over the course of delivery. Dedicated site supervision, comprehensive RAMS documentation, and daily safety briefings ensured all works were executed to the highest industry standards.
Regular communication with local stakeholders — including Lancashire County Council, utility providers, and residents — ensured transparency and responsiveness, reinforcing Redburn’s reputation for safe, considerate, and compliant operations.
Collaborative project delivery
Driving connectivity and local impact
The successful completion of the Skelmersdale Fibre Deployment project highlights Redburn’s ability to deliver large-scale fibre infrastructure efficiently, safely, and to exacting standards.
